ALVIN SHRIVER DIES AFTER LONG ILLNESS

Heart Trouble and Complications Fatal To Prominent Local Man

Alvin B. Shriver, well known business man of Winterset and Madison county, died at his home on West Washington street, Wednesday morning, October 19th, about nine o'clock, at the age of 63 years. Mr. Shriver had become ill with heart trouble and complications, since May, and little hope was held for his recovery. His condition became much worse last evening.

The deceased was a son of the late Captain and Mrs. William Shriver and was born in this county, February 13, 1869. He was raised here and following his graduation from high school, attended business college in Des Moines. His marriage to Miss Jess Coryell took place, September 4, 1895.

Mr. Shriver engaged in the real estate business and has always lived here, with the exception of ten years when he resided in California. The Shriver family has long been prominent in the business and social life of Winterset. His father came to Winterset in 1854, and first was a wagon-maker by trade. As a young man, he enlisted and served in the Civil war and after that was familiarly known as "Cap". He served as postmaster for several years. For a long time the "Shriver homestead" was a stone house 2-1/2 miles north of Winterset.

Alvin Shriver built and resided in for a number of years, the large square house on West Filmore now occupied by H. Finney's. They were the parents of three children, Marjorie and Doris who died while the family resided in California and Robert, who now resides in Los Angeles. Mr. Shriver leaves his wife, and son and two grandchilden, Doris and Billy.

When the paper went to press, Wednesday afternoon, funeral arrangements had not yet been made. Services will be held here however and burial will be made in the family lot, where his daughters are buried in the Winterset cemetery.

ALVIN B. SHRIVER DIED WEDNESDAY

Winterset Loses Fine Citizen. Founded Savings bank. 63 Years Old.

A. B. Shriver, life long citizen of Winterset, died at his home on West Washington street at 8:30 Wednesday morning. He had been confined to his bed since the last day of May with heart disease. He is survived by his wife and son, Robert, of Los Angeles.

Alvin Shriver was born in Winterset, graduated from the Winterset high school and from the Cedar Rapids business college. He was a post office clerk for a short time when his father was postmaster, going from there to the First National Bank. He went into the real estate business in a year or two, and shortly after founded the Winterset Savings Bank of which he was president.

He built two or three fine residences, added Shriver’s addition to Winterset and donated the road from the city limits on the northwest to the Pitzer road. He moved to Des Moines where he laid out Shriver’s addition and afterward, with varying fortune, went to Los Angeles and then to Sioux Falls, returning to Winterset about 12 years ago and opened a real estate and insurance office.

He planted a great orchard of Delicious apple trees south of Peru that is just commencing to bear but lost it in the depression that clamped down on the country.

No date has been set for the funeral until his son has been heard form.
