Mary Elizabeth Young was born in Richland county, Wisconsin on March 16, 1855 and passed away at Martensdale, Iowa, January 27, 1932 at the age of 76 years, 10 months and 11 days.
The loss of her mother when she was six years old left her father with a family of little ones and at the age of 13 she came to Iowa to make her home with her cousin, Dr. Green of Peru, bringing with her a younger brother and sister.
She was married to William Martin Travis at Peru, August 14, 1872. The early years of their married life were spent in and near Peru, then the family moved to the Travis homestead in Walnut township and in 1899 came to Winterset where she lived until a short time before her death.
The death of her beloved husband September 20, 1928 after 56 years of loving companionship was a loss which only her unfaltering faith in God's wisdom enabled her to bear. She often spoke of the comfort given her by his promise that God would soon bring them together again and that he would surely be waiting for her at the end of the road.
When a young girl she united with the Methodist church and was a member until the time of her death. To her family and the many friends who knew and loved her, her life will be a blessed memory of unselfish devotion to others.
Preceding her in death were her husband, one son, Ernest, a daughter, Lena L. and one grandson and one great granddaughter.
The following children are left to mourn their loss in her death; Mrs. J. A. Cox of Blue Lake, California; Mrs. J. W. Keller of Waukesha, Wisconsin; Mrs. H. B. Wise of Martensdale; Mrs. H. H. Preston of Newark, New Jersey; Mrs. A. L. Pennebaker of Sharpsburg; Mrs. N. E. Hollen of Winterset; Mrs. L. H. Sprinkle of Detroit, Michigan; Will D. Travis of Newark, New Jersey and Mrs. J. R. Sawyer of Winterset. Twenty-nine grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.
A year ago her failing health made it necessary for her to give up her home. Since that time she has been a much loved guest in the homes of her children.
Death from pneumonia came after an illness of only a few days at the home of her daughter, Mrs. H. B. Wise of Martensdale.
Rev. J. Krebs of Des Moines had charge of the services which were held at Tidrick's funeral home Saturday afternoon, January 30th at 1:30 o'clock and burial was in the Winterset cemetery. The Rev. A. P. Keast, pastor of the Methodist church assisted with the service.
