MARY ELIZABETH COMPTON

Mary Elizabeth Compton, daughter of Amos and Mary Barnett, was born June 19, 1869, on a farm near Earlham, and passed away in Grand Rapids, Michigan, May 29, 1957, at the age of 87 years.

She attended Earlham school and Dexter Normal at Dexter. On January 31, 1900, she was united in marriage to the late Edmond S. Compton. To this union four children were born, one son and three daughters. Following their marriage, they resided on a farm east of Earlham. After a year on the farm, they moved to town, where she lived until her death.

Elizabeth was a birthright member of the Earlham Friends church where she so faithfully gave of her services. She was an active member of the local Sorosis club.

A home-loving person, she was happiest when she knew her children or grandchildren were coming home, and she could prepare for them a bountiful meal.

She enjoyed spending the winter months with her daughter, Esther, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. While there this past winter she became ill. The best in medical skill and nursing care was given her, but she had lived a full life, and her body became too tired to carry on. She slipped quietly away early Wednesday morning while at the Blodgett Memorial hospital.

She leaves in sorrow her four children, Marion of Earlham; Esther of Grand Rapids, Michigan; Mrs. Raymond DeLay of West Des Moines, and Alice of Rockford, Illinois; one sister, Mrs. Laura Jackson of Earlham, nine grandchildren, six great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

The funeral service was held in the Earlham Friends church on Saturday, June 1, at 2:00 o’clock, with the pastor, L. Willard Reynolds in charge. Burial was in the Earlham Cemetery.
