NEWTON BEEM, AGED 80 DIES IN CALIFORNIA

Newton Beem a former resident of Winterset, died last Wednesday, March 21, at Los Angeles, Calif, according to word received by relatives here. He was 80 years of age, and had been in ill the past year with a heart condition.

Mr. Beem was the last survivor among the eight children born to Richard and Elsie Newkirk Beem, pioneer settlers in the Buffalo community south of Winterset. He was born and spent his early life on his parents farm there. As a young man he learned the barber’s trade, working in Winterset for several years. Later he was appointed town marshal of Winterset, serving in that capacity for many years.

He was married to Edna Gentry of Winterset, and they were parents of three daughters. The wife and one daughter, Pearl, preceded him in death. Surviving are two daughters, Elsie and Louise, both of California.

He moved from Winterset to California about 40 years age and was employed as a park custodian in Los Angeles until his retirement.

Funeral services and burial were held in Whittier, Calif.
