Martha Jane Koser

Martha Jane Snyder was born in Winterset, September 7, 1856, and died February 20, 1932. She resided in Winterset all of her life and in her demise our county has lost one of the last remaining members of our pioneer families.

She was the daughter of Samuel and Jude Snyder, who were among the first to settle in Winterset. For a half century Mr. Snyder was a leading merchant of the city. Martha Jane, who was the second child to be born, was known to the people of Winterset as Jennie. All the people here were intimately acquainted with her and respected her as a vivacious affectionate girl and a most estimable woman.

She was graduated at the high school in 1874, being one of the six of that first class of the school. The other five were Laura Cummings, Carrie Hoskins, Ida Ewing, Hattie Cox and Dillie Jones, all of whom have passed away except Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Zeller of Winterset.

October 12, 1882, Jennie was united in marriage to Mr. Charles Koser, who had to come to Winterset from Illinois to engage in the dry goods business, which he has successfully followed for a half century. During all of these years, the Kosers have been among our most active and influential citizens of the place. Their home has always been the center of social activities. Especially in church enterprises have they been conspicuous.

The Methodist church of which they have been members for so long a time, would not be what it is now, were it not for their work and benefactions. For many years of her young womanhood, Mrs. Koser was the church organist, a position she so acceptably filled and for which she neither asked nor received any compensation. She has also been, during these years a member of the foreign missionary society of the Ladies Aid society.

Mr. and Mrs. Koser have not been blessed with any children born to them, but several years ago, they adopted as a daughter, their niece, Mrs. Bessie Landers, who now resides at Denver, Colorado, and through her the following three grandchildren; Charles, Carrie Jane and Guye and one great granddaughter, Barbara Ann Landers. One brother, Warren Snyder and four sisters remain; Mrs. Mary Couch, Mrs.Lulu Arthur, Mrs. Myles Young and Mrs. Fred Mardis.
