Obituary

B. F. Carter, son of Peter and Parthena Blair Carter, was born in Adair county, Kentucky, March 13, 1845. He was the third child born in a family of ten children. He came with his parents to Madison county, Iowa, when a boy and grew to manhood on his father’s farm near Blair chapel.

On January 1, 1868, he was united in marriage to Miss Susan Williamson, by Rev. Campbell Hughart. To this union were born twelve children, eight sons and four daughters, viz: Robert, Ed, Laurin, and Mrs. Lillie Ellen Johnson, of Nebraska, William, of South Dakota, Mrs. Jessie Elizabeth Wade, Emory, Elza, Dyle and Okey, of Des Moines, and Mrs. Marian Martin, of St. Charles, also Mary Jane, a little daughter, 15 months old, who preceded her father forty years ago. All the children, except Ed, were with their mother, and together with the thirty-four grand-children, sixteen great-grand-children, four brothers, two sisters and many other relatives and a host of friends mourn his death.

After his marriage, they lived on their farm joining Conger, Ia., until failing health compelled him to quit. He went into the mercantile business until their children had all gone from home. They sold their farm and property in Conger and bought a home in Wick, where they lived a few years, when on the morning of March 24, 1922, he peacefully passed away, aged 77 years and 11 days.

At the age of 21 years, he was converted under the pastorate of Rev. Roberts, in a series of meetings, held in the Johns school-house, which stood a short distance east of Blair Chapel and joined the United Brethren church, and lived a consistent member since. He gave liberally to the support of the church. In his religious life, as in his citizenship, he was of a quiet disposition. He lived in peace with his neighbors and always showed displeasure in the whisperings of the backbiter and tongue of the slanderer. When he could not speak well of his fellowmen, he said nothing. We, his neighbors, come to consider his life-walk among us, can say truly – “A good man has gone.”

Rev. S. W. Lee held a short service at the home, after which Rev. J. P. Maxwell conducted the funeral services at Blair Chapel and his body was laid to rest in the cemetery joining the church.

Those who attended from a distance were – Mr. and Mrs. J. W. and Ward Nuzum, Mr. and Mrs. Steve Oliver, Mrs. Anna Witter and Mrs. Chas. O’Brien, of Des Moines, Frank Kellar and wife, of Summerset, (missing information) Keller, of Prole, and Mr. (missing information) and Mrs. Dr. (missing information).
