OBITUARY

Bradley L. Douglas

Bradley Douglas, son of Stephen C. and Ellis Douglas, was born in Grand Blanc, Michigan, June 14, 1852.

At the age of eighteen he moved with his parents to Iowa and settled in Earlham where the home has been ever since except for a brief period of time spent in adjoining states.

Mr. Douglass was one of the early settlers of this community and witnessed the evolution of the country from virgin prairie to flourishing towns and beautiful homesteads.

The first work he did after arriving in this place was to assist in the building of the Presbyterian church. After farming for awhile, he and his brother J. R. Douglass engaged in the drayage and coal business in 1883 and conducted this for nearly thirty-five years, retiring only when broken in health.

Soon after the I. O. O. F. was organized in Earlham in 1893, Bradley became affiliated with this organization. To the precepts and obligations of this order he was entirely faithful. The motto of his life is well expressed by the three links of the chain, Friendship, Love and Truth. Mr. Douglass had held all the posts of office in the Odd Fellows and had filled them well. He was a member of the Rebekkahs as well and these two organizations are present in a body to pay him tribute today. Always a lover of nature he loved to wander in the woods and along the streams and was familiar with all the haunts and habits of the wild things hereabout and loved to point them out to those less familiar.

Kind, loving, thoughtful, he helped to make this community what it is today. Always of a cheerful, helpful disposition, when not in ill-health he did much to keep the home the attractive one it has ever been in Earlham. He was a man of his word and everyone valued his friendship highly.

On Sunday, November 9th, as the church bells were calling the people to worship in the evening service, he passed quietly to the other shore, leaving to mourn his passing his only sister, Mrs. S. I. Nunamaker of Earlham; two nieces, Sarah Nunamaker of Earlham and Mrs. Roy B. Emms of Perry, Iowa; and a host of friends throughout this entire community who unite their sympathy with those of the sorrowing relatives.

Funeral services were held Tuesday November 11 at the Church of Christ in Earlham, conducted by H. T. Clampitt of Greenfield, and an old friend of the family and assisted by M. B. Pringle pastor of the local church. Interment in Earlham cemetery.
