1922

Mary A. Pitzer was born in Harrison county, Ohio Jan 29, 1839 and died Dec 20, 1922, almost 94 years old. Her husband, Dr. J. N. Pitzer, One son and one daughter preceded her in death.

She has been a long time member of the Methodist Church, having joined at the age of 12 years. In her early days she was very active in the work of the church and as the wife of a physician, never tired of doing for the sick and was ever ready to aid in any way possible.

As a mother and home maker, words fail to tell how faithfully she performed her work, only giving it up in the last few weeks. After the death of Kitty, she never left her bed and gradually grew weaker until God saw fit to say “It is enough, come up higher” So she fell asleep without a struggle. Of such a life it might well be said she hath done what she could.

Caring for her in her last illness were her daughters; Mrs. Emma Gundy of Mankato, Kans.; Flora Pitzer of Winterset and a grandson, Will Gundy. There also survive one daughter and two sons, who could not be present at this time. Also, several grandchildren, and one great great granddaughter, Grandma Pitzer appreciated her friends and also any who showed her any act of kindness. Our loss is her gain. Heaven will seem nearer now that Mother is there.

The funeral services were held on Friday afternoon at 2:30 at the Methodist church, conducted by the pastor, D. J. Shenton. The interment was in Winterset Cemetery.

Thursday, December 20, 1922

One of Winterset's loved residents, Mrs. Mary Pitzer, died this morning at her home on East Green street, after a long period of failing health.

"Grandma" Pitzer, as she was called by her large circle of friends, was 94 years old and lived here about 40 years. She and her daughters, Florence and Kitty, had always made their life together. This bond was broken in October by the death of Miss Kittie, an event that hastened Mrs. Pitzer's death.

Mrs. Pitzer will be greatly missed by her acquaintances, who deeply appreciated her loyal friendship and devotion.
