Obituary

William Alexander Carter, son of Peter and Parthena Carter, was born in Adair county, Kentucky, on May 29, 1847, and passed away at his home in South township, Madison county, Iowa, on March 9, 1922, aged 74 years, 9 months and 10 days. He came with his parents to Scott county, Illinois, in 1860, and to Madison county, Iowa, in 1854, where he has resided continually till called to his heavenly home.

He was married to Elizabeth M. Walkup, on August 31, 1869. To this union were born five children, three of whom are living and were present at his bedside during his illness, ministering with love and tenderness to his every want.

He was converted in early manhood and united with the United Brethren church and was always a true believer in the saving power of Jesus Christ and his last days were in peaceful contentment, and his evidence was that he was ready to meet the Lord and not a cloud to obscure the way. He was a most patient sufferer, although strickened with blindness for several months.

He leaves to mourn his departure, his aged and afflicted wife, three children, Mrs. Arminta Nuzum, of Des Moines, Mrs. Georganna Knight, of St. Charles, and John Walkup Carter, near the home. One daughter, Alice Ethel, passed away May 31, 1888, aged one and one-half years, and the oldest son, Vincent Albert, passed away February 24, 1908, aged nearly 33 years. He also leaves to mourn, eleven grand-children, six great-grandchildren, five brothers, John M., Ben F., George J., James G. and Robert, and two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Breeding and Mrs. Eliza Haynes, and many nieces and nephews.
