WALTER S. YOUNG DIED AT 92 YEARS

Long-Time Resident Here Was Barber More Than 60 Years

W. S. Young, one of Winterset's oldest residents, died here Monday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Cornell, at the age of 92 years. He had been in his usual good health until being stricken suddenly.

Walter Spencer Young was a native of Washington county, Pennsylvania, where he was born Jan. 22, 1858. He was one of 10 children born to Samuel R. and Sarah Roberts Young, and he was the last surviving member of that family. In 1865, when he was seven years old, he came with his family to Iowa. They made the trip down the Ohio river and up the Mississippi by boat, thence overland from Burlington. The family settled in Walnut township west of Peru.

When he was 16 years of age he came to Winterset to learn the trade of barber. He worked at that trade for more than 60 years.

He was married in 1884 to Rosa Wilhemina Beem of near Winterset. They were the parents of five children, twin sons dying in infancy. The wife and mother died in 1909.

Shortly thereafter he left Winterset, living at Madrid, Ellsworth, Woolstock and Des Moines. His second marriage, occurring in 1919 was to Philomena Martens. They returned to Winterset in 1934, and her death occurred here in 1939. Since then he had made his home with his daughters here.

Mr. Young is survived by three daughters, Mrs. J. P. White, Mrs. John Cornell and Mrs. Harry Vance, all of Winterset; five grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held this Wednesday from Anderson's home for funerals, in charge of the Rev. Glenn Parrott. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
