Thursday, November 9, 1932Death of George Hartfield
St. Charles Special, November 5-George Hartfield, Sr. passed away at his home at this place Saturday, October 29th. He was born in Sussex, England, May 4, 1852 and was past 80 years of age at the time of his death. He had been in poor health for the past three years but his last illness was of only a few days duration. He had been a great sufferer from asthma and this hastened his death.
Mr. Hartfield had lived in St. Charles for a number of years and had by his kindly, cheering disposition made many friends. He was a great lover of plants and flowers and found much pleasure in caring for them and sharing them with his neighbors.
He is survived by Mrs. Hartfield and five children; Thomas of near Bevington; George of this place; Mrs. Anna Rhoades and Mrs. Rachel Dorrell of Winterset and Mrs. Pearl Threase of Kellogg, and nine grandchildren. Four other children preceded him in death.
Mr. Hartfield in his early life, was a member of the Church of England, but several years ago he united with the Methodist church here and his funeral service was held there Monday morning at 10 o'clock conducted by his pastor, L. W. Nixon, assisted by the Rev. Carnahan of the United Presbyterian church. Burial was made in the Montpelier cemetery near Patterson.
