JOHN MCNAMARA DIES

John McNamara, well known resident of Winterset and Madison county died Sunday, May 7 after an extended illness at the age of 71 years. He suffered a stroke several years ago and he has been in poor health since that time. Two weeks ago, he became critically ill and was taken to the hospital at Clarinda. There he died Sunday afternoon.

The Rev.Arthur Fitzpatrick conducted his funeral service at St. Joseph's Church Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock and burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.

Mr. McNamara belonged to a pioneer family of Madison county. He was a son of Martin and Mary Linane McNamara and was born in Des Moines, May 1, 1862. They came to Madison county in 1870 and located on a farm in Union township.

The marriage of Mr. McNamara and Agnes Vaughan of Winterset was solemnized on April 9, 1888, and they made their home on a farm six miles northeast of Winterset. That township was his home until in 1920 when they moved to Winterset to the house that they purchased on West Court avenue.

They were the parents of five children, who survive them. Richard and Eugene of Winterset; Charles of Villa Park, Illinois; Mrs. W. S. Phillips of Des Moines, and Mrs. R. C. Burch of Davenport. Mr. McNamara also leaves one brother and two sisters, James McNamara, Mary McNamara and Mrs. Hugh Rogers, all of whom reside in this community.

Mr. McNamara always followed the occupation of farming and he was a successful one. In 1920 he retired from the active management of the farm and moved to Winterset. He was a member of the Catholic church and was a faithful attendant as long as his health would permit.

His pallbearers were Elmer Orris, Lee Tidrick, Eli Greenwood, Ira Greenwood, Joe Allgeyer and P. E. Morrissey.
