MARTIN V. VANDEBURG DIES

Pioneer Madison Co. Farmer Dies; Was 90 Years of Age

Martin V. Vandeburg, aged resident of Madison county, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ray Wilson, Friday, October 18th after an extended illness. Mr. Vandeburg was 90 years of age.

The deceased was a son of Mr. and Mrs. James Vandeburg and was born in Green county, New York, May 14, 1843. His parents were representatives of the original colony that emigrated to the New Netherlands from Holland. He attended the public schools in Green and Ulster counties, New York, and his first business experience was gained in a store operated by a tanning company for the benefit of its employees. He accompanied his family to Illinois where he resided until 1876. In that year he with his wife and children came to Webster township to make their home, and they have been residents of this community since then.

His marriage to Melvina Reaves took place April 3, 1868 and three children were born to them; Mrs. Minnie Wilson of Wessington Springs, South Dakota, Arthur Vandeburg and Mrs. Jennie Wilson who reside west of Winterset. He lived on the farm until 1904 and then they moved to Winterset and lived here until the death of his wife, February 16, 1916. Several years later he married Mrs. Susan Wight and they moved to Cove, Arkansas and resided there until the time of her death, June 3, 1925. Since then he has resided with his youngest daughter, Mrs. Wilson.

Mr. Vandeburg united with the Baptist church in early life. Later he joined the Maple Grove Evangelical church and was an active member for many years. After moving to Winterset, he united with the Presbyterian church and the last few years of his life, he was a faithful attendant of the Evangelical Oak Grove church.

In addition to his children, Mr. Vandeburg leaves six sisters, two brothers, nine grandchildren ane eight great grandchildren.

The Rev. W. B. Tarr, pastor of the Oak Grove church, conducted his funeral services, Sunday afternoon at the Ramsey-Richards funeral home at 2:30 o'clock and burial was in the Winterset cemetery.
