The people of Winterset and Madison county, were shocked to hear of the death on Saturday, January 14th, of Mrs. T. J. Larrison, a well known resident of this community. Mrs. Larrison, who was 78 years of age, had apparently been in good health, and had been up town several days last week. Saturday morning she suffered a stroke however and she died that evening at her home on Filmore street.
Mrs. Larrison was born near Tipton, in Cedar County and was one of a family of ten children. She was raised in this community, and on July 27, 1876, she was married to Thomas J. Larrison, a veteran of the Civil war, who had seen service with Grant down the Mississippi and in the Red River campaign.
The couple came to Madison county in 1889 and settled near Dexter. In 1912 they came to Winterset to live on their farm, at the east edge of Winterset. Here, Mr. Larrison died April 30 1930, and since then she has resided in Winterset.
The Larrisons’ were parents of four children, all of whom survive their parents: Mrs. Orrell L. Brooks of Des Moines, Ward Huber Larrison and John A. Larrison of Mitchell, South Dakota and Mrs. Bertha Wilkinson of Winterset. There are also four grandchildren.
The Rev. W. C. Porter, pastor of the United Presbyterian church conducted her funeral services at the Ramsey-Richards Funeral home, Tuesday afternoon, January 17th, at 2 o’clock and burial was in the family lot in Winterset. Mrs. Owen DeMar and Mrs. W. C. Porter sang several duets and were accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Vergie Lowe. E. R. Zeller, a Civil war veteran and a long time friend of the family, spoke a word of the wonderful friendships of the families of the veterans.
More details of her life may be found in the mortuary column.

Mrs. Thomas J. Larrison
Mrs. Mary Catherine Larrison, the daughter of John and Harriett Ruber was born near Tipton, Cedar County, Iowa, on June 7, 1854. She died at her home in Winterset the evening of January 14, 1933, aged 73 years.
She was one of a family of ten children of whom but one remains, Mr. Winfield Scott Ruber of Tipton, Iowa. Her birthplace was a log cabin on a farm bought in 1839 by her grandfather in the land sales held in Davenport of land in the Black Hawk purchase. Her father came overland from Ohio in an open buggy to settle in Iowa. As just a little girl she helped her mother cook for days preparing food for the Civil War soldiers at Muscatine. They drove by wagon to deliver the food and the little girl moved with awe amid the stirring events of that day.
John Huber, the father of Mrs. Larrison, was one of the prominent lawyers of Cedar county's early day. He was one of the founders of Cornell College at Mount Vernon. He gave largely to its support and in gratitude the college maintains a perpetual scholarship for any member of the family who desires to attend.
On July 27, 1876, she was married to Thomas J. Larrison, a veteran of the Civil war who had seen service with Grant down the Mississippi and in the Red River campaign. Mr. Larrison was in the battles at Champion Hills, Black River Bridge, Vicksburg, Sabine Cross Roads and many others of less importance. His regiment the 24th Iowa Volunteer Infantry was in the Division brought east to see service in the Shenandoah Valley.
The young married couple came to Madison county in 1889 and settled near Dexter. In 1912 they came to Winterset to live on the farm east of town. Mr. Larrison's death occurred April 20, 1930. She moved to town to spend her last days among her friends.
The four children all survive their parents: Mrs. Orrell L. Brooks of Des Moines, Ward Huber Larrison and John A. Larrison of Mitchell, South Dakota and Mrs. Bertha Wilkerson of Winterset. There are four grandchildren.
The funeral was held at the Ramsey-Richards Funeral home on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Mrs. Owen DeMar and Mrs. W. C. Porter sang the beautiful hymns: "Nearer My God to Thee", "Lead Kindly Light" and "Abide With ME". They were accompanied by Mrs. Vergie Love at the piano. E. R. Zellar, one of our last remaining Civil war veterans and a long time friend of the family spoke a word of the wonderful friendships of the families of the veterans. Rev. W. C. Porter preached from the text, "Behold He Cometh". Burial was made in the family lot at Winterset.
