Page 1Death of Mrs. Sophia Smith
Mrs. Sophia M. Smith passed away at her home, Saturday, July 26th, after an illness of three months. She had been cared for by her daughter, Mrs. C. H. Driscoll. The funeral services were held Monday morning, July 28th, at 9 o’clock, at the St. Joseph’s Catholic church, conducted by Rev. Luke Plunkett. Burial was in the St. Patrick’s cemetery, four miles north of Bevington. The services at the grave were conducted by the Rev. Dugan, of the St. Patrick’s church.
Mrs. Smith is survived by four children: Joseph and Alfred, of Van Meter; Billy, of Fort Dodge, and Margaret Driscoll, of Winterset, and one brother, Charles Duffy, of Oakley, Minnesota. Two children died in infancy and one daughter, Annie, in 1911. Mr. Smith preceded her in death in 1914. He was a Civil war veteran.
Mrs. Smith was born in Philadelphia in 1852, the daughter of Patrick and Margaret Duffy. She came with her parents to Madison county when she was three years old. On January 20, 1878, she was married to Mr. Smith.
The past fourteen years she had made her home in Winterset. Mrs. Smith was past 78 years of age at the time of her death. She had eighteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
