Thomas Kirkland
Thomas Kirkland was born in Brockville, Ontario, Canada, September 17, 1851, and departed this life October 12, 1930, at the age of 79 years and 25 days. In 1865, at the age of 13, he, with his parents, moved to Winterset, Iowa. Later he moved to a farm where he resided until he was united in marriage to Mahala Shaw. To this union 7 children were born: Will, Gale and Lillie, of Macksburg, and Anna Lee, of Pueblo, Colorado, who were with him in his last illness; three sons, George, Emery, and Charles, having preceded him in death. Besides his wife and four children, he leaves two sisters, Lizzie Shipton, of Seattle, Washington, and Caroline McGlothlin, of Winterset; 15 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, and a host of friends to mourn his loss.
He was a devoted husband and father. He is one who will be missed by the community for his helpful deeds and cheery words.
He was a member of the Grand River I. O. O. F. lodge. Although not a member of any church, he was always interested in religious work.
