MORTUARY - Mrs. J. W. Roderick

Melissa F. Ballentine, the youngest daughter of Alex and Mary Ballentine, was born in Coshocton county, Ohio, November 13, 1844. She passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. F. H. Meyer, at the age of 85 years, 7 months and 24 days.

At the age of 12, she, with her parents, came to Madison county and settled in Jefferson township in 1856. She was married to John W. Roderick in the year 1866. To this union were born 6 children: Mrs. Lillie B. Reigle and Mrs. Alice M. Meyer, of Van Meter; Mrs. Mary O. Kent, of Winterset; Perry S. Roderick, of Earlham; Alex B. Roderick, of Chicago, and John A. Roderick, of Minneapolis. All are living. Besides the children she leaves to mourn 19 grandchildren, 4 having preceded her in death, 22 great grandchildren, and a host of friends.

At the age of 12 she united with the Methodist church and was a faithful member till the last.

Grandmother Roderick was a kind, devoted mother, a lover of all young people, and always interested in their activities. During eight long weeks of illness she remained patient.

Funeral services were held in the Jefferson United Brethren church, July 9th, at 2:30 o’clock, the Rev. J. H. Hampshire, the pastor, officiating. Interment was made in the Jefferson cemetery.

Death of Mrs. Roderick

Mrs. M. F. Roderick, a resident of Madison county since 1856, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fred Meyer, of Jefferson township, Monday morning, July 7, at the age of 85 years.

She had been in poor health for some time, but had been ill at her daughter’s home for eight weeks. Her husband preceded her in death, having died in 1911.

Besides her children, left to mourn her loss, she leaves grandchildren and great grandchildren. The sons are: John, of Minneapolis; Perry, of Earlham, and A. B., of Chicago. The daughters are all residents of the county, Mrs. J. W. Reigle and Mrs. Fred Meyer, of Van Meter, and Mrs. H. D. Kent, of Winterset.

Short funeral services were held at the Meyer home at 2 o’clock on Wednesday, and at the Jefferson church at 2:30 o’clock. The Rev. J. H. Hampshire, pastor of the church, officiated. Burial was made in the Jefferson cemetery. A more complete account of her life will appear in next week’s issue.
