Death of Mrs. Will Leach

Mrs. Will Leach, a life long resident of Madison county, died Sunday, December 14th, after an extended illness. Mrs. Leach, who was 57 years of age, became ill in October 1929, with a malignant growth, and her condition has become gradually worse since that time. In October, she and her daughter, Georgia rented furnished rooms, in town, so that the latter could attend high school, and here she died.

Sunday evening, the body was taken to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ralph Alexander, on West South street and short services, for the family were held there, Thursday afternoon, at 1:30 o’clock.

The Rev. F. H. Perkins, of Dallas conducted the funeral services, at the Methodist church, Tuesday, December 16th, at 2 o’clock. He was a former pastor at the West Star church. Mr. Perkins was assisted by the Rev. A. P. Keast, pastor of the local church, and burial was made in the McDonald cemetery.

Mrs. Leach was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William McDonald, and was born in this county, August 1, 1873. Her marriage to William Franklin Leach was an event of September 26, 1893. For the past 24 years, they have resided in Douglas township. They were the parents of twelve children, all of whom, with the father, survive Mrs. Leach. The children are one son, Ray W. Leach of Winterset, and eleven daughters: Verna McNichols, Nora Cox, Marie Carey and Ida Alexander of Winterset; Pearl Harpool of Ogden, Utah; Aletha Bussanmus of St. Marys; Wilda Leach and Alberta Fidler of Des Moines; Florence Cummings and Fern Cummings of St. Charles, and Georgia at home. All of the children were with the mother at the time of her death, except Mrs. Harpool, who was here at Thanksgiving time.

Mrs. Leach is also survived by her parents, and four brothers and three sisters of this county: Robert, Luther and Wallace McDonald; and Mrs. J. A. Kitchell, Mrs. Vern Bennett, and Mrs. Harvey Clark.

More details of her life may be found in the mortuary column.

She was married to William Franklin Leach September 26, 1893. She leaves to mourn her loss her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. McDonald, 4 brothers, 3 sisters, her husband and her one son, Ray W. Leach, of Winterset and 11 daughters, Verna McNichols, Nora Cox, Marie Carey and Ida Alexander, all of Winterset; Pearl Harpool of Ogden, Utah; Aletha Bussanmus, of St. Marys; Wilda Leach and Alberta Fidler of Des Moines; Florence Cummings and Fern Cummings of St. Charles, and Georgia, the only one of this large family left at home to be her father’s companion, and 30 grandchildren. With all the numerous cares and responsibilities of this large family; one more sacrifice, large or small, was never too great for her to make for those dear to her. Her life as a wife and mother was one of beautiful devotion and sacrifice.

She became a member of the West Star Methodist church in 1912 and has retained her membership there ever since, and when able attending regularly with her children.

Mrs. Leach has lived all her life in Madison county, and the last 24 years have been spent in Douglas township. Every one who knew her, loved and admired her for her ready smile and cheerful disposition.

She has been ill and a constant sufferer for over a year, and during most of that time has been given loving and professional care by a daughter, a graduate nurse. The daughters and son, husband, and family gave every care and comfort that love could provide.

All of the children are present at this time except one daughter, Pearl, and she visited her mother at Thanksgiving, but was unable to be present at this time.
