Friedrich Johann Scar, the son of Edward Scar and Elizabeth, nee Fett, was born in Madison county, Iowa on June 20, 1896. He was baptized in the Lutheran faith on November 9 of that year and confirmed on April 9, 1911. He received his education in the Madison county schools. On March 12, 1922 he was united in marriage with Ethel Newman of Adair. Three children were born to this union.

Fred was engaged in farming for many years on the original Scar farm, in Penn township. Upon his retirement he moved with his wife to a small acreage not far away. Fred was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church, holding various offices in the congregation and teaching in the Sunday School for almost thirty years.

He fell asleep in Jesus in Des Moines on Tuesday, October 9, at the age of 77 years, 3 months and 19 days. He is survived by his beloved wife, Ethel, two sons, Norman and Leonard, both of Earlham, one daughter, Alice (Mrs. Donald Bruns) of Woodland Park, Colorado, eleven grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and one brother, Charles Scar of Dexter.

Memorial services were held at Zion Lutheran Church on Friday, October 22, at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Norman M. Luecht officiating. The pallbearers were Alvin Scar, Carl Jobst, Eugene Martens, Paul Newman, Earl Newman, Merle Newman. Burial was at the Penn Center cemetery under the direction of Evan Funeral Service.
