Della Dunbar Gilbert, one of ten children of Loren and Belle Dunbar, was born June 13, 1889, near Galesburg, Illinois. Her parents moved near Dallas Center in 1901 and later moved to a farm between DeSoto and Earlham. She attended elementary school in the country and graduated from the Earlham Academy.

Della was united in marriage to Loyal R. Gilbert, July 8, 1911, in Winterset, Iowa, by Rev. A. A. Walburn. To this union three children were born: Delbert of Des Moines, Verlyn of Carson City, Nevada, and Marlyn of Earlham. Della and Loyal lived on a farm southwest of Earlham until 1939 when they moved to town and lived there the remainder of their lives.

Della was baptized in the Earlham Church of Christ in 1924. She became active in church affairs and taught Sunday School for a number of years. She worked as a cook in the Earlham cafe for a number of years in addition to being a house wife.

Della was in failing health for several years and spent the last four months at Maple Lin Manor; there she passed away Friday evening at 5:00 p.m., December 7, 1973.

Della is survived by her three sons: Delbert, Verlyn and Marlyn; three brothers Bert of DeSoto, Harry of Mountain Burg, Arkansas, and Tony of Greenfield; two sisters; Hazel Hummel of Adel and Elsie Sly of Henderson, Illinois; twelve grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.

Services were held at the Earlham Church of Christ on December 10 with Ernest Baiotto in charge. Interment was in the Earlham cemetery.
