Wallace F Cooper well-known Earlham business man for many years died suddenly this Wednesday morning, June 5, at his home in Earlham. Death apparently resulted from a heart attack. He was 55 years of age.

Mr. Cooper was a native of Winterset where he was born Dec 18. 1907, a son of Mr. and
Mrs. Frank Cooper. His early life was spent in this community. He had been in business in Earlham for the last 29 years. For about 15 years he served as manager of the United Food Market there then operated his own grocery store for many years. Since selling that business, he had operated a variety store in Earlham.

Mr Cooper had served on the Earlham town council for two terms. He was active in the
Methodist church there and other community affairs.

Surviving relatives include his wife, a son, Richard Cooper of Boone and two sisters, Mrs. Hazel Locke of Winterset and Mrs. Dolly Calhoun.

Funeral arrangements were pending as the Madisonian went to press.

WALLACE F. COOPER

Wallace Franklin Cooper, son of Sarah Daniel and Frank Cooper, was born in Madison county, Iowa, December 18, 1907. He died June 5, 1963 at the age of 55 years, 5 months and 18 days.

On December 24, 1928, he married Edith Fenn.

"Wally", as he was popularly known, came to Earlham in September 1934 as manager of the United Food Market. After 12 years, he resigned and bought the ByLo Store which he later sold. He and his wife, Edith, also have operated the Cooper Variety Store for a number of years. After leaving the grocery business, he spent a large part of his time as a painter.

Wally took an active part in community affairs, having belonged to the Earlham fire department for many years, been a charter member of the Earlham Lions Club and served several years on the town council.

He was a lifetime member of the Methodist church and for the last several years was the teacher of an adult Sunday School class. The evening before his death he had been studying his Sunday School lesson and these materials plus a book given to him by his class were still lying on the dining room table. Wally had served on the nominating committee and as chairman of the board of trustees of the church at various times. Last fall, he caulked the windows of the church with the help of Fred Hodson and Dale Mills.

He is survived by his wife, Edith, one son, Richard of Boone, five grandchildren-Ardyce, Debra, Carolyn, James and Jerry, two sisters-Dollie Calhoun of Cedar Rapids and Hazel Locke of Winterset and a host of friends.

Wallace F. Cooper Died Suddenly

Wallace F. Cooper, long-time Earlham resident and business man died suddenly Wednesday morning at his home.

He was getting ready to go to work when he became ill.

“Wally”, as he was popularly known, came to Earlham in September 1931 as manager of the United Food Market. After 12 years, he resigned and bought the ByLo Store which he later sold to Art Brown.

He and his wife, Edith, also have operated the Cooper Variety Store for a number of years. After leaving the grocery business, he spent a large part of his time as a painter.

Wally took an active part in community affairs, having belonged to the Earlham Fire Department for many years, was a charter member of the Earlham Lions Club, and served several terms on the town council. He was a member of the Earlham Methodist church and had held various offices as well as teaching a Sunday School class.

He is survived by his wife, one son, Richard of Boone, and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at the Earlham Methodist church.

Earlham business places will be closed from 1:00 p.m. until after the funeral in respect to his memory.
