ALETHA BAKER

Aletha Hiatt Stanley, daughter of Josiah and Sarah Wilson Stanley, was born on March 19, 1881, in Dallas County, Iowa. She passed away on Sunday morning, July 7, 1963, at Northwestern Hospital in Thief River Falls, Minnesota. (Burial in Earlham Cemetery)

Her early life was spent on the family farm near Earlham, where she received her education and grew to womanhood. She was a birthright member of the Friends Church. Later, with her husband she became an active member of the Earlham Friends Church, where she maintained her membership.

On December 17, 1902, she was united in marriage to Esla A. Baker in Dallas County, Iowa. After their marriage they lived for a short time in Pawnee City, Nebraska, then returned to Earlham, where they made their home until 1919. At that time they moved to Oskaloosa, in order that the children might have the advantage of a college education. While the girls were attending Penn Academy and College, Mrs. Baker took into the home several students, who lived there during the school year. Her life was devoted to her family and home. When the Iowa Yearly Meeting convened at Oskaloosa, her home was open to relatives and friends from Earlham and other towns.

After the death of her husband in 1948, she maintained her home for several years, spending much time with her daughter, Elsie and family near Oskaloosa. For the past six years she has made her home with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Hauswirth of Thief River Falls, Minnesota, where she had been confined in the hospital for three months.
