LORIN SAYRE OF WINTERSET DIES

Death Occurred on Sunday After Two Years of Illness

Lorin B. Sayre, one of Madison county's prominent citizens for many years died Sunday, June 23, at Madison county Memorial hospital in Winterset. He was 74 years of age, and had been ill since March of 1955.

Mr. Sayre was serving as state senator from the Madison-Adair district when he was stricken in 1955. He was a former Madison county superintendent of schools.

He was a son of Dr. S. N. and Lura Sayre, and was born at Marne on Oct. 16, 1882. The family moved to St. Charles in 1883, where much of his life was spent. He graduated from the St. Charles high school with the class of 1900, and taught several terms of school in and near there before engaging in the mercantile business. Later he returned to the teaching profession on a part time basis, while he attended Des Moines university, where he took his B. A. degree. This was followed by graduate study at the State University of Iowa in Iowa City.

He spent 33 years in the teaching profession. He served as teacher and superintendent of schools at St. Charles, Macksburg, Van Meter, Otho and Goldfield. He ended his teaching career with 12 years of service as Madison county superintendent of schools.

In 1952 he was elected state senator from the Madison-Adair district starting his term in 1953. He continued serving in this capacity until suffering a stroke in Des Moines in March, 1955. He entered Memorial hospital here in May 15, and had been a patient at the hospital most of the time since that date.

Prior to his senate term, he had worked as bridge inspector on road work under the Madison county engineer's office.

He was married May 10, 1905, to Mabel Buchanan. They were parents of a daughter, Fae. Mrs. Sayre died in 1951. In addition to the daughter Mrs. Eldon Parker of Albuquerque, N. Mex., he leaves two grandsons, and two sisters, Mrs. Nydie McVay of Des Moines and Mrs. Ethel Kessler of Iowa City.

He was a life-long and active member of the Methodist church. He was affiliated with the Winterset Rotary club, and served as delegate to the International convention in Mexico City in 1952.

Funeral services were held this Wednesday from the Winterset Methodist church, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. W. W. Steinmetz, assisted by the Rev. S. C. Picken, pastor of the Winterset Presbyterian church. Burial was made in the St. Charles cemetery.
