HARLAN HAMMANS, AGE 13, VICTIM

Was Riding Pony After Cattle When Fatal Accident Occurred

Harlan Hammans, 13-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Hammans of Union township, was fatally injured on Wednesday evening of last week when the pony he was riding reared and fell on him. He died the next day at the General hospital in Des Moines from internal injuries suffered in the accident.

The boy was riding the pony after the cattle when the accident occurred. The pony reared and fell over backward, pinning the boy underneath, with the saddle horn striking his abdomen. As he was alone, he was forced to crawl slowly and painfully to the highway where he attracted the attention of passing motorists. He was taken to his home, where the seriousness of his injuries was not realized until the next morning, when he was rushed to the hospital where his death occurred.

Harlan was born at Lorimor on Aug. 4, 1928. His early childhood was spent on a farm near there. At the age of 3, he moved with his parents to the Greenwood farm northeast of Winterset. From there, they moved to their present home two miles north of Winterset.

Harlan became a member of the Winterset Baptist church in 1940. That summer he became afflicted with infantile paralysis, during the epidemic that occurred here. He fought a courageous battle for life and was the victor. He had fully recovered from the disease.

The boy is survived by his parents; three sisters, Marjorie, Eloise and Belvah, and his grandmother, Mrs. Ella Thomas. One brother, having died in infancy, preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held from the Winterset Baptist church Sunday in charge of the pastor, the Rev. Von B. Elbert. Burial was made at Lorimor.
