EDNA DANFORTH SERVICE FRIDAY

Local Resident Died Wednesday Morning at Age 78 Years

Mrs. Fred Danforth, a well-known resident of Winterset and Madison county, died at the Iowa Methodist hospital in Des Moines, Wednesday morning, Aug. 19, at the age of 78. She became ill at her home southwest of Winterset last Monday, and was brought to the Madison county Memorial hospital and was taken by ambulance to the Des Moines hospital last Friday. Her condition remained critical and she underwent major surgery Monday, death came at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday morning.

Edna, as she was familiarly known, was a daughter of Laclede and Laura Buchanan Lowe. She was born at Gerlow, Marshall county, Illinois, July 30, 1881, but she and her parents moved to Winterset the following year and this community has since been her home. Her father, a Winterset business man, for many years owned and operated a furniture store and undertaking business on the east side of the square.

She attended the Winterset schools and also St.Catherine's Episcopal school for girls in Davenport. She was married to Fred E. Danforth, a member of a pioneer Winterset family, October 15, 1908 and they continued to reside in this community, he being a cattle dealer and farmer as long as his health permitted. He died February 28, 1947.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian church in Winterset and was formerly a member of the Order of Eastern Star and several other local clubs.

Mrs. Danforth leaves two children: a daughter, Dorothy, Mrs. Robert Reiley of Red Oak and Frederick Lowe Danforth of Compton, Calif. She also is survived by her only sister, Mrs. Mardie L. Crossley of Winterset, and three grandchildren; James Reiley of Red Oak, and Frederick Jr. and Jill Danforth of Compton.

The Rev. John C. Porath will conduct her funeral services at the Richards funeral home, Friday, August 21 at 2 p.m. with burial in the Winterset cemetery.
