Considering the bad condition of the roads the funeral of Mr. Jas. Kirby was largely attended. The services were conducted by Rev. Molyneaux and the body interred at St. Patrick’s cemetery beside her husband who died some years ago. Her daughter Margaret was too ill to attend the funeral.

Obituary

Died, at her home in Crawford township on Thursday morning March 21, Mrs. James Kirby, at the advanced age of ninety years. Mrs. Kirby was one of the best known and most respected residents of the community in which she lived.

She was born in county Mayo, Ireland, where she continued to reside until her marriage to James Kirby of the same county. They then came to America, and after a residence of eighteen years in Carbondale, Penn., they, with their six children, came to Des Moines, Ia., and two years later came to Crawford township, Madison county.

Just fourteen years ago the kind husband and loving father was called to his eternal home, since which time a son and daughter have done all that willing hands could do and loving hearts could prompt to make the dear mother’s declining years ones of happiness in the old home. Mrs. Kirby was a woman of unusual business ability and until a week before her death seemed interested in all current happenings. Most of her time for several years was spent in repeating the rosary, that form of prayer so dear to the heart of every faithful Catholic.

On Sunday, March 17, 14 years from the day her husband’s last illness came upon him, she was seized by a fatal illness, and on the anniversary of the day on which her husband’s soul returned to its Maker, her body was consigned to its last resting place. Her death was a very peaceful one. Surrounded by children and grandchildren, friends and neighbors, she peacefully slept until the first rays of the morning sun shone resplendent o’er the earth as her soul winged its flight to the “Home Beyond.”

Her six children survive her, and are William H., of Crawford township, James J., of Union township, Mrs. John F. Burke and Mrs. Michael B. Costello, of Granger, Ia., and John F. and Margaret, who live in the old home.

Despite the almost impassible roads, her funeral was a large one and the ceremony was conducted at St. Patrick’s church by her pastor, Rev. Father Molyneaux, who had administered the last sacraments a few days previous. Father Molyneaux’s sermon was a beautiful tribute to the faith of the departed one.
