Death Claims Jim Vlieger

A farmer and resident of Madison County since 1941, James Vlieger, Sr., died Wednesday, January 21, 1976, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. He was 69 years of age.

The son of Jacob Vlieger and Margaret Hulst Vlieger, James Vlieger was born January 3, 1907 in Sioux County, Iowa near the town of Hospers. His residence at the time of his death was rural Winterset in Union township.

In addition to farming he worked through the local ASC office.

The marriage to James Vlieger and Dorothy Lyddon took place February 1, 1933 in Winterset. Mrs. Vlieger survives her husband with three sons and three daughters. They are: Paul Vlieger of Norwalk; James Vlieger, Jr. of Peru; Kenneth Vlieger of Fairmont, Minnesota; Mrs. Jasper (Imogene) DeRaad of Belle Plaine, Iowa; Mrs. Dean (Joyce) Klenk of Toledo; and Mrs. Harry (Janiece) Tinnell of O'Neal, Nebraska.

Also surviving are 14 grandchildren, one brother, Tom Vlieger of Sheldon; and three sisters, Mary Menning of Sioux City; Margaret Zylstra of Edgerton, Minnesota; and Mrs. Ann Stier of Hoffman, Minnesota. Mr. Vlieger was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services for James Vlieger, Sr., were conducted Saturday, January 24 at 2:00 p.m. at the Winterset Community Fairgrounds Building. Presiding were Frank Tyson and Dan Sherick. Burial was made at the Winterset Cemetery.
