John Mayer

John Mayer was born in Sandhofen province of Baden, Germany, Jan. 1, 1846. Died January 10, 1917 in Des Moines, Iowa. He emigrated to America in the year 1866 and made his home with an uncle near Prairie City, Iowa.

He was married to Caroline Volk, March 9, 1869 and settled the same spring on a farm near Hebron. To this union were born six children: Stephen G. of Des Moines; George J., deceased December 1892; Emil W. of Hebron; Ross H. of Collins, Montana; Mrs. H. H. Holley and Lydia P. Mayer, both of Des Moines. His wife preceded him in death on March 20, 1910. A brother, Jacob Mayer of Dalton, Nebr., survives the deceased.

Mr. Mayer was a true, earnest Christian and soldier of the cross. He was truly converted over 40 years ago and was a thorough and consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal church. He was always interested in all matters and affairs of his church and contributed freely of his means for the support of all its enterprises.

His funeral was preached in the M. E. church at Winterset and he was laid to rest by the side of his wife in the Rock City cemetery, Jan. 13, 1917.
