Mrs. Mary McMichael Dies

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth McMichael aged resident of Winterset, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Etta Beerbower, early Tuesday morning, December 23d, at the age of 83 years. The deceased was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gamble and was born in Ohio, in 1847.

When she was a child seven years of age, she came here, with her parents, and has since made this county her home. In 1872 she was married to James McMichael, and then lived on a farm near Patterson. They were the parents of eight children, four of whom survive the mother. Her husband died in 1892.

She leaves three daughters, and a son: Mrs. Sadie Hardy of Patterson; Mrs. Etta Rosanna Beerbower, Winterset; Mrs. Esther Allen of Van Meter, and Thomas Henry McMichael of Des Moines. She also leaves three step children, 24 grand children and 16 great grand children. Michael Gamble of Winterset, a brother, also survives her.

The Rev. W. C. Porter, conducted the funeral services at the United Presbyterian church, Friday morning, December 26th, at 10:30 o’clock and burial was made in the Montpelier cemetery, north of Patterson.

Mary Elizabeth Gamble, daughter of Robert and Margaret Gamble, was born at Steubenville, Ohio, April 21, 1847, and passed peacefully away at the home of her daughter in Winterset, at four o’clock, December 23rd, 1930.

When seven years of age Mrs. McMichael came to Iowa with her parents in 1854, and spent the remainder of her life in Madison county. In 1872 she was united in marriage to James McMichael. They established their home on a farm near Patterson.

Eight children were born to them in this home. Mrs. McMichael was preceeded in death by an infant son, Alexander, her husband Mr. McMichael died March 26, 1892. Mrs. Margaret Quick, the eldest daughter, departed this life October 29, 1924; the third daughter, Mrs. Emma Eliza Bennett passed away February 15, 1927, and her son, James Robert, October 26, 1928.

She is survived by three daughters and one son, Mrs. Sadie Hardy, Patterson; Mrs. Etta Rosanna Beerbower, Winterset; Mrs. Esther Estella Allen, Van Meter, and Thomas Henry McMichael, of Des Moines. She also had three loving step children, Miss Annie McMichael, Mrs. Jennie Hartfield, St. Charles, and William McMichael of New Brighton, Pennsylvania, twenty-four grand children, and 16 great grand children, one aged brother, Michael Gamble of Winterset, and many loving friends.

In early girlhood she gave her heart to her Saviour, and united with the United Presbyterian church. She was a member of the Winterset congregation at the time of her death.
