MORTUARY

William Spence

William Spence was the son of John and Mary Ritchie Spence. He was born in Stranraer, Scotland which is about 160 miles southwest from Glasgow, on the 21st day of December 1847. He died at the home of his brother, Samuel Spence on Sabbath, November 23rd, aged nearly eighty-three years.

He spent his early childhood days in Glasgow with his uncles and aunts. He sailed the seas for eleven years. In 1885 when thirty-eight years of age he came to America. He first made his home in Kansas. Shortly after he came to Iowa and took up as his chief life work the care of thoroughbred horses. He worked with the Singmasters of Keota and at San Jose, California. In 1915 he came to Madison county to reside with his brother in whose home he spent his last days beloved by all who know his gentle spirit.

He was from a family of eleven brothers and four sisters. These all have gone before him save two sisters yet in Scotland and one brother, Samuel with whom he lived. He never married. He kept the circle of his friends small but no man ever had friends of deeper devotion.

In his earlier days he became a member of the Established church of Scotland. At his death his membership was in the Pitzer United Presbyterian church.

The funeral was held from the Pitzer United Presbyterian church at one-thirty o’clock Tuesday, November 25th. Burial was made in the Jackson Center cemetery.
