James Arthur Gordon, son of John Newton and Rachael Charlotta Clark Gordon was born August 30, 1875 at their farm home west of Winterset on the old Bluff Road. He departed this life at the Madison county Memorial Hospital on Sunday, March 2nd, at the age of 92 years, 6 months and 2 days. Mr. Gordon's grand-parents were the pioneer settlers of Madison County. He attended Winterset schools for his former education. During his early life he traveled with circuses such as the Ringly Bros. Circus, playing in the bands covering almost every state in the United States. In his later years he was a sign painter til the time of his retirement, here at his home town of Winterset.

Mr. Gordon was united in marriage to Sarah Catherine Lease on March 10, 1897 here in Winterset. To this union four children were born.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters, 6 brothers, one son, and his wife Sarah in 1920.

Mr. Gordon is survived by 2 daughters, Mrs. Margaret N. Beerbower of Winterset, Ia., and Mrs. Mildred Howell of Sacramento, California; one son, Willard A. Gordon of Minneapolis, Minn.; 7 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. He also leaves other relatives and a host of friends.
