Mortuary

George Fisher, one of the pioneers of this vicinity, died Thursday, Dec. 11th, at Mercy hospital in Des Moines, after a short illness. He was taken to the hospital Sunday, when it was found necessary to operate for hernia, which they hoped would save his life.

He was born in Edgar county, Illinois, Sept. 18, 1837, his age at death being 87 years, 2 months and 23 days. He grew to young manhood in the Illinois home and came with his parents to Madison county in 1856, where he became one of the early settlers of the north part of the county.

He was united in marriage to Phoebe Hester in 1861. To this union were born nine children, three of whom, Alice, Wilbur and Isaac, died in early childhood.

He was converted and united with the M. E. church in early life and was a charter member of the Blue Ridge class, which later was made a part of the Van Meter work, where he held his membership. For many years he took a lively interest in all church and social affairs of his community, and was a regular attendant of the church services. In later years, his hearing became so affected that he was deprived of his enjoyment of public services.

He was married to Agnes Drabell in 1883. He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife, two daughters and four sons: Sarah Belle Rigdon of Gladstone, N. M., Edwin M. of Winterset, Lewis Franklin of Jackson, Minn., Albert Warren of DeSoto, Owen Ellsworth of Eagleville, Mo.; also an adopted daughter, Helen Marie, and one sister, Mrs. M. J. Neal of Booneville and one brother, Edwin Fisher of Tulsa, Okla., and 11 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Van Meter M. E. church Sunday afternoon, Dec. 14th, conducted by the pastor, Rev. E. H. Green. Burial was at the Payton cemetery, formerly known as the Blue Ridge cemetery.
