Olive A. Hockett, daughter of Elihu and Mary Emily Stanley was born near Wabash, Indiana, April 1st, 1854 and passed away April 12th, 1930, aged 76 years and 11 days.
The family moved to Iowa, near Oskaloosa when Olive was seven years old. Early in her youth she learned the value of a Christian life. Although a birthright member of Friends she never had much opportunity for church work or school advantages in her girlhood, because she helped in the home, with the care of her younger brothers and sisters.
In 1873 she married William Stubbs. Two children were born to this union, Hattie M. and Alfred W. both of whom are still living. They made their home in New Sharon taking part in the church and community life. In 1883 William Stubbs passed away leaving the care and responsibility of the two children to their mother.
She was married to Lindley J. Hockett in 1884. Three children were born to this union, two died in infancy and one daughter Ethel lived to the age of 24 years.
They lived in Des Moines for 22 years, as no Friends Church was near, they joined with the United Bretheren, helping to advance the Kingdom, as they saw the need of service.
The past seven years have been spent in Earlham going back to the church of her faith. Olive Hockett has given her time and strength to the different branches of church work. The Missionary Society, Sunday School, and church services, found her in her accustomed place ready to take an active part.
After the death of the daughter Ethel, the little granddaughter who was named for her grandmother, was cared for and raised to young womanhood by her grandparents.
Olive is the last of a family of eight children. For the last three months she has been confined to her bed, patient and cheerful always and ready to go when the call came.
The husband Lindley J. Hockett, two children Hattie Wilson, of Earlham and Alfred Stubbs, of Mason City; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, relatives, neighbors and a host of friends mourn the loss of one whose wisdom and council will be greatly missed.
“Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord, from henceforth. Yea saith the Spirit, that they may rise from their labors and their works do follow them.”
Funeral services were conducted at the Friends Church Tuesday afternoon, with the Rev. S. N. Hester officiating. Burial was in Earlham cemetery.
