MAC McGAFFIN, Winterset

Charles Mullen “Mac” McGaffin, 88, of Winterset died Jan. 10, 2007, at his home.

A memorial service was held Monday, Jan. 15, at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset with Pastor Bobb Barrick officiating. Burial of his cremains was at Corning Cemetery.

Mac McGaffin was born Dec. 20, 1918, in Corning to Samuel L. and Cleo E. (Mullen) McGaffin. He was a graduate of Corning High School and Iowa State Teachers College. His marriage to Vivian Mae McClelland took place April 26, 1941, in Maryville, Mo. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving during World War II. Mac taught school in Durant and in 1947 moved to Winterset, where he had been a teacher, coach and athletic director in the Winterset Community Schools for 35 years. Mac was a member of the Quarterback Club, Iowa Association of Track Officials, American Legion Post 184, Winterset Husky Booster Club, Winterset Alumni Association, Iowa High School Athletic Directors Association and the Winterset First United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife and one son, Michael McGaffin.

He is survived by one son, Andy McGaffin of Spencer; one daughter, Chris Johnston of Indianola; a brother, Dean “Pete” McGaffin of Winterset; and four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the McGaffin Track and Field Complex at Winterset High School.

Arrangements were handled by Collins Oak Park Chapel and Funeral Service in Winterset.
