Fon James Shutt, 74, of rural Winterset, died of injuries suffered about 2:30 p.m. Thursday, December 28, when the car he was driving was struck broadside by an auto driven by David L. Walker, 33, of Doniphan, Nebraska, about seven miles west of Winterset.

Mr. Shutt, who was alone in his vehicle, was treated at the Madison County Memorial Hospital and then taken to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines where he died of massive injuries to his left side.

Walker was treated for a mild concussion at Memorial Hospital and released Friday morning. His wife and two small children, who were also in the car, suffered minor bruises.

According in Madison County Sheriff Rex Rouse, the accident occurred at the intersection of Highway 92 and County Road P57 to Earlham. Mr. Shutt, who was traveling south on P57 stopped at the stop sign at the intersection but according to Sheriff Rouse, apparently did not see the approaching vehicle and pulled out to turn east, directly in front of the Walker auto which was traveling west on Highway 92.

The Shutt car, a 1966 Ford and the vehicle Walker was driving, a 1974 Chevrolet Vega station wagon, were both totaled in the collision. The force of the impact tore the left door off the Shutt auto and the Walker vehicle landed in the ditch south of the intersection.

Mr. Shutt's death was the fourth highway fatality in Madison county in 1978.

Services for Mr. Shutt were held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday December 30 at Collins Funeral Home with the Rev. Phill Hall officiating. Burial was in the St. Charles Cemetery.

The son of John Henry and Frances Ann McCrea Shutt, Mr. Shutt was born in Warren County on March 4, 1904 and moved to Madison County in 1942 where he was a farmer. He was married to Gertrude Beamer on December 1, 1945 in Winterset.

He was preceded in death by his wife in June of 1971, his parents and a sister Fern Shutt. Survivors include two sons, Frank and Carroll, both of Winterset and three granddaughters.
