There passed away on last Friday, one of the pioneer settlers of Grand River township, Wesley Cochran. He moved to this county in 1851. By industry and hard toil he acquired more than ordinary success in life and became the heaviest land owner in that part of Madison county. The names of Cochran, Conway and Mack will live in the history of Madison county as the names of men who had a large part in developing Grand River township - all three have within a few years passed away and left in younger hands, the work they carried on with marked success. A brief sketch of Mr. Cochran's life will be found elsewhere in this paper.

Wesley Cochran was born in Perry county, Ohio, Nov. 14, 1834, and died March 15, 1912. aged 77 years, four months and on day. His father died when he was five years of age, and his mother when he was seven, leaving him in the care of an uncle, M. D. Martin, which he came to Will county, Illinois in 1849, where he resided until 1851, when he came to Madison county. In 1854 he went back to Illinois, returning to Iowa an 1860, entering the homestead which has been the family home since that time.

On Nov. 14, 1861, he was united in marriage with Elizabeth Hamblin of this county. To this union were born nine children - seven boys and two girls: Mrs. Kate Schele, Joh William, Frank Walter, Lee Fred, Field and Mrs. Mattie Tucker, all of whom are living except Frank, who died Oct. 29, 1892 and Kate, who died Aug. 26, 1896. With the exception of John who lives in Winterset and William in Lorimor, all the children reside on farms near home. The wife, seven children and fifteen grandchildren survive him. The funeral services were held from the home, Sunday, March 17, 1912, Rev. Roy M. Spooner officiating. J. D. Martin of Melrose the only relative in Iowa, was in attendance. Beautiful floral offerings showed the loving sympathy of friends.

This has closed a long life of usefullness. The wayfarer was ever welcome in the home, the man in need was never turned from his door. Now, the kind and welcome voice of Uncle Wesley, as he was familiarly called, is hushed in silent sleep. A host of friends join their tears with the bereaved ones, in sympathy.

Wesley Cochran died Friday morning after several months of illness. Mr. Cochran was one of the early pioneers of this county and a most respected citizen. Last fall he and Mrs. Cochran celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. It was a very quiet affair, for at that time Mr. Cochran was not able to be out of bed only a short time each day. He is survived by his fife, six sons and one daughter and several grandchildren. The funeral was held at the home on Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Spooner. Interment was made at the Moon Cemetery.
