Sarah Ann Kephart was born in Indiana, Dec. 25, 1843 and died at her home in Madison county Sept. 27, 1920, aged 76 years, 9 months and 2 days. She came to Madison county when 10 years old. She was married to George Shaver June 13, 1867 and went to housekeeping on a farm in South township, near Ebeneezer schoolhouse.
Her husband passed away Dec. 8, 1904. She was the mother of ten children, nine of whom survive; Mrs. Laura Cason, Maxwell, Ia.; Mrs. Bettie Blair, Patterson, Ia.; Mrs. Julia Johnston, deceased; Mrs. Sina Pixler, Fowler, Colo.; Oscar Shaver, St. Charles, Ia.; Mrs. Allie Taylor, St. Charles, Ia.; Mrs. Olla Palmer, Earlham, Ia.; Mrs. Emma Freeman, Colfax, Ia.; Charlie Shaver, Story City, Ia.; and Mrs. Lula Palmer, Earlham, Ia.
She joined the Methodist church when quite young and her whole life was full of Christian acts. Ministering to others was her pleasure and delight. In the daily routine of her work in the home her cheerfulness and the sweet Christian spirit in which she performed her tasks was an inspiration and help to her children. Not only was her influence for good felt in the home, but throughout the community in which she lived. She sacrificed both pleasure and comfort for the welfare of others. While she did not go out much from her home, it was a gathering place for her neighbors and friends, who were always welcome. She began to fail in health last spring and grew weaker until the end came. During her illness she was never heard to utter one word of complaint, but bore her affliction patiently. She will be missed by her children and grandchildren and her many intimate friends. The funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at Blair chapel, conducted by Rev. Jackson Giddens of Winterset.
