Samuel Johnston, a life-long resident of Madison county, died at his home, south of St. Charles, Thursday, August 8th. Mr. Johnston was 74 years of age and had been in poor health during the past four years. Since the death of his wife, four months ago, his condition grew rapidly worse.
Mr. Johnston was one of the prominent farmers of this county. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Johnston, early settlers of the county, and was born in Madison county. He was married to Miss Martisha Phipps, March 30, 1875, and they were the parents of ten children. Mrs. Johnston died March 30, 1929, and James Mortimer, Tina Mae and an infant daughter preceded their parents in death.
The deceased is survived by seven children: Mrs. Jennie Sloan, of Lowry City, Missouri; Mrs. Mattie Scott, Truman Johnston, Mrs. Mollie Bumbarger, Raymond Johnston, Mrs. Myrtle McClure and Mrs. Cora Leggett, all of near St. Charles. He leaves thirteen grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. Mollie Roberts and Mrs. Jim McGinnis, of St. Charles, and Mrs. Jennie Switzer, of Florida. Five brothers also survive him: John and A. W., of St. Charles; Will, of Bevington; Albert, of Fort Madison, and Wes, of Maxwell.
The Rev. F. G. Barnes conducted the funeral services in the Methodist church at St. Charles, Saturday, August 10th. He was assisted by Rev. G. E. Carnahan. Mr. Johnston was buried in the St. Charles cemetery, by the side of his wife.
