Death of Mrs. James Downs

St. Charles, March 12. Special – Mary Minerva McCandless, daughter of John and Mary McCandless, was born July 7, 1854, in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, and came to Iowa with her parents in the fall of 1865, and located near St. Charles, in which locality she had since made her home.

In early girlhood she was converted and united with the Old School Presbyterian church and in this faith she lived consistently the remainder of her life.

March 3, 1887, she was united in marriage to James A. Downs, and to this union seven children were born, six sons and one daughter, two sons having died in infancy.

Besides the husband, the following children remain to mourn the loss of a mother, Ambury Byron, now of Winterset; Ambrosha Blanche who is still at home; David McCandless, of St. Charles; Roy Garold, of Tracy, and Loy Harold, of State Center, and one small granddaughter, Bonnie Lee. All were with her to minister to her needs during her final illness, as was also her sister, Mrs. Mattie Fulson, who is the only remaining member of her father’s family.

She died at her home in St. Charles, after several weeks of illness, aged 74 years, 7 months and 27 days.

Mrs. Downs belonged to the Auxiliary of the American Legion. Her four sons volunteered and served in the World war.

Funeral services were held in the United Presbyterian church March 7th, at 2 o’clock, conducted by the Rev. G. E. Carnaban, assisted by the Rev. F. G. Barnes, pastor of the M. E. church, and burial was made in the St. Charles cemetery.
