Beulah Shackelford, Leon

Beulah Iona Shackelford, 80, of Leon, died April 19, 1997 at the Leon Care Center. Funeral services were April 23 at the Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home in Leon. The Rev. Danny Bruner officiated the services and burial was at the Garden Grove Cemetery.

She was born Sept. 30, 1916 in Ottumwa to Burton Franklin and Beulah May (Todd) Black. She married Earl Arthur Shackelford in Waterloo on Sept. 3, 1933. In 1947 the couple moved to a farm south of Patterson and later moved into town. In 1961, they moved to West Palm Beach, Fla., where they lived for 33 years before moving to Humeston. While in Florida, she worked as floor supervisor for Goodwill Industries. She also played the piano at the Humeston Baptist Church of which she was a member. She was also a craft maker and an artist.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one sister; two brothers; one grandson; and one great grandson.

Surviving relatives include one daughter, Earleen Thornburg and husband Lester of Garden Grove; three sons, Clyde Shackelford and wife Marjorie of Seoul, South Korea, John Shackelford and wife Barbara of Port Saint Lucie, Fla., and Stephen Shackelford and wife Judy of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; four sisters, Dorothy Hanney of Sacramento, Calif., Ruth Holt of Decorah, Betty Andrews of Portland, Ore., and Shirley Ammondson and husband Ralph of Eugene, Ore.; two brothers Carl Black of Sacramento, Calif., and Frank Black and wife Alice of Lakeland, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
