J. W. McKinney was born August 24th, 1842 and died at his home in Winterset, Ia March 17th, 1908, aged 64 years 6 months and 23 days.
October 31st, 1861, he was united in marriage to Miss Catherine Friend, and to this union seven children were born; one daughter dying in infancy.
Early in life Mr. McKinney united with the Christian church, and kept the faith until the summons came to go home. He became a member of the M. W. A. March 22d, 1887 and of the W. O. W. November 30, 1894. Members of these orders attended in a body.
The funeral services were held at the residence, Thursday March 19th, after which the body was laid to rest in the Rock City Cemetery. The bereaved wife and relatives have our deepest sympathy.

J. W. McKinney, one of our old and respected citizens died at his home in the northeast part of town Tuesday morning, after an illness of about three weeks. The funeral occurred this afternoon.

J. W. McKinney was born August 24th, 1843, in the state of Indiana and died at his home in the northeast part of town at 2 o’clock in the morning on March 17th, 1908, age 74 years, 6 months and 22 days. The cause of his death was stomach and kidney trouble.
In 1861 he was married to Miss Cathrine Friend at Newton, Iowa, and came to Winterset in 1879 and has made this place his home ever since.
There were seven children born to them and all survive him except one daughter, which died in infancy. There were two children with him at the time of his death, but all the living children attended the funeral.
He joined the Christian church in 1886 and always held that way. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America and also a member of the Woodmen of the World, the latter of which he was special deputy and traveled in the interest of that lodge. Both lodges marched in one body at his funeral.
His children are H. D. McKinney, of Reasonor; W. H. McKinney, of Newton; J. E. McKinney, of Caney, Kansas; J. T. McKinney, of Winfred, South Dakota; A. B. McKinney of Colfax, and Myrtle A. McKinney, of this city.
On account of the sickness of his wife, the funeral services were held at the house last Thursday afternoon at three o’clock and was conducted by Rev. Harlan, of the Church of Christ.
He leaves a wife, six children, two brothers, four sisters, fourteen grandchildren and a host of friends to mourn their loss. Only one of his brothers was at his funeral, W. B. McKinney, of Newton. Mr. and Mrs. John Nandorph, of Colfax, and Mr. Storr’s family, of Union township, were also in attendance at the funeral. He was laid to rest in the Rock City cemetery.
