Gary Schermerhorn Dies in Colorado

Gary Randall Schermerhorn, 25, of Lakewood, Colorado and formerly of Winterset, died Thursday, February 8, of injuries he suffered when struck by a car Wednesday night as he walked on a street in Lakewood. Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, February 12, at Collins Funeral Home with burial in the Mt. Pelier Cemetery. Officiating at the services were Elder H. Roger Bothwell and Elder Willis Dagenais.

The Colorado State Patrol said the driver of the car left the scene and is still being sought.

Mr. Schermerhorn was born on November 20, 1953 at Iowa City and was the son of Ray Schermerhorn and Marjorie Hayden Baker. He had lived in Colorado three months and was employed as an orderly at Columbine Manor in Lakewood, Colo. He graduated from Oak Park Academy in Nevada, Iowa in 1973 and attended Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska. He was a Seventh Day Adventist.

Survivors include his parents, Ray Schermerhorn of Winterset and Marjorie Gallentine of Carlisle; his step-parents, Barbara Baker and John Gallentine; a brother, Teddy Schermerhorn of Earlham; a sister, Sheryll Auten of Earlham; two half brothers, Ray August Baker, Jr. of Winterset and Guy Gallentine; a half sister, Tammy Jo Baker of Winterset; and his grandparents, Teddy Hayden of Lorimor and Dona Johnsonn of Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ory Schermerhorn, Harry Baker and Mrs. Regina Hayden.
