THOMAS SAWYER DIED THURSDAY

Death Occurs at Age of 81 Years in Des Moines Hospital

Thomas J. Sawyer, formerly of Winterset, died Thursday, Feb. 18, at a Des Moines hospital, following a heart attack. He was 81 years of age, and had been in ill health for two years.

Mr. Sawyer was a native of Adair county, where he was born in 1883, a son of John B. and Barbara Sawyer. He lived in Winterset for many years, and was employed here as a mechanic for the Sawyer Truck lines. He moved to Des Moines 21 years ago.

He is survived by his wife, the former Edna Johnston of Winterset; a daughter, Mrs. Wilma Peterson of Joliet, Ill.; two step-daughters, Mrs. Lucy Davis of Council Bluffs and Mrs. Grace Burgess of Des Moines; two stepsons, Merle Johnston of Omaha and Bruce Johnston of Spencer; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, John K. Sawyer of Winterset; and four sisters, Mrs. Mabel Hollen, Mrs. Pearl Morris, Dr. Grace Sawyer and Mrs. Rose Givan, all of Winterset.

Funeral services were held Monday from the Hamilton Funeral home in Des Moines. Burial was made in the Greenfield Cemetery.

Sawyer Burial At Greenfield

Services for Thomas J. Sawyer, 80, of 210 S. W. Davis ave. will be at 10:30 a. m. Monday at Hamilton’s Funeral Home. Burial will be at 1:30 p. m. in the cemetery at Greenfield.

Mr. Sawyer died of a heart attack Thursday at Broadlawns Polk County Hospital after a two-year illness. Born in Adair County, he moved here 21 years ago from Winterset, where he was a mechanic for Sawyer Trucking Lines.

Surviving are his widow, Edna; a daughter, Mrs. Wilma Peterson of Joliet, Ill.; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Lucy Davis of Council Bluffs and Mrs. Grace Burgess of Des Moines; two stepsons, Merle Johnston of Omaha and Bruce Johnston of Spencer; four sisters, Mrs. Mabel Holland, Mrs. Pearl Morris, Dr. Grace Sawyer and Mrs. Rose Gwen, and a brother, John K. Sawyer, all of Winterset; 13 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
