MRS. MAY SAWYERS DIED WEDNESDAY

Life-Time Resident of This County Was Nearly 86 Years of Age

Mrs. Andrew Sawyers, a well known resident of Madison county died at her home in Winterset, May 3rd, after a short illness. She would have been 86 years old in three weeks. She had lived all of her life in Madison county, most of that time having been spent on the farm near the place of her birth.

Mrs. Sawyers, the former May Pope, daughter of Stephen and Nancy Pope, was born May 25, 1875 in Webster township. She was united in marriage to Andrew Sawyers in Madison county March 24, 1897. Mr. Sawyers death occurred in January 1947.

Mrs. Sawyers had been a member of the Christian Church for nearly seventy years, joining the church at the time services were being held at the Drake school house west of Winterset. December 3, 1916, she transferred her membership to the Winterset First Christian church. She was one of the oldest members of this church and seldom missed services so long as her health permitted. She was a member of the Loyal Workers class of the Sunday school.

Mrs. Sawyers was one of the charter members of the Sunshine Garden club.

Surviving are her three sons, Clare, Raymond and Carl of Winterset, three grandchildren, Keith, Cindy and Steven, two great grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Sam Sawyers of Denver, Colorado.

Funeral services were held from the First Christian church in Winterset last Friday afternoon with the Rev. Robert A. Owens in charge, assisted by Rev. Paul M. Hann of the First Methodist church of Ottumwa. Burial was in the Winterset cemetery.
