DOCTOR SAWYER DIED HERE SUNDAY

Had Retired Here After Long Career as Head of State Hospital at Woodward

Dr. Grace M. Sawyer of Winterset, who retired three years ago after serving as superintendent of the Woodward State hospital for 10 years, died Sunday May 21, at Memorial hospital in Winterset. She was 78 years of age.

In private life, Doctor Sawyer was Mrs. John C. Gable. Her husband also was a staff member at the Woodward hospital. She and Doctor Gable were married in 1937. His death occurred in 1952.

Doctor Sawyer was born in Adair county Feb. 26, 1889, a daughter of John B. and Barbara Drake Sawyer. She graduated from Winterset High school with the class of 1910. After teaching rural school in Adair county, she studied medicine at Loyola university in Chicago, receiving her M.D. degree in 1916. She interned at Allentown, Pa., and Binghampton, N.Y.

Doctor Sawyer practiced medicine at Greenfield for several years before joining the staff of the Woodward State hospital as resident physician. She served as assistant superintendent of that institution for 10 years and as superintendent for the past 10 years there. She had spent 38 years as a staff member at the hospital. She returned to Winterset to make her home in September 1964, after having retired in 1961.

Ten years ago, Doctor Sawyer was cited as "Medical Woman of 1957" by the American Medical Women's association in New York. She was a member of the American and Iowa Medical societies and American Psychiatric society and the National Women's Medical society. She was also a member of Eastern Star. Her church membershiip was with the Methodist church at Woodward.

She is survived by a step-son, John B. Gable of Battle Creek, Mich.; three step grandchildren; two step great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Mabel Hollen and Mrs. Pearl Morris of Winterset; and a brother, John K. Sawyer of Winterset.

Funeral services were to be held this Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. from the First Methodist church in Winterset, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. Everett K. Burham. Burial was to be made in the Winterset cemetery.
