JAMES SAWYER DIED MONDAY

Pioneer in Trucking Business Here Was 69 Years of Age

James R. Sawyer, a well-known Winterset resident for many years, died Monday, Aug. 22, at his home in Winterset. He had been in failing health for several years. He was 69 years of age.

Mr. Sawyer was born in Adair county on May 15, 1891, a son of John B. and Barbara Drake Sawyer. His early life was spent in the Webster community.

He came to Winterset in 1922, and in 1924 started one of the pioneer trucking lines in Iowa. He continued in the trucking business as a partner in the Sawyer Lines of Winterset for many years until failing health forced his retirement.

He was married at Des Moines on Dec. 24, 1921 to Louisa Travis. One daughter, Mrs. Phyllis J. Gallagher, preceded him in death in 1949.

He was affiliated with the Webster Methodist church and was a member of the Masonic lodge and Shrine.

Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Doris S. Poindexter of Sumner and Mrs. Barbara Demory of Indianola; a son, Philip J. Sawyer of Omaha; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Thomas J. Sawyer of Des Moines and John K. Sawyer of Winterset; and four sisters, Mrs. Mabel Hollen, Mrs. Pearl Morris and Mrs. Rose Givan of Winterset and Dr. Grace M. Sawyer of Woodward.

Funeral services are to be held this Thursday at 2:30 p.m. from the Richards Funeral home, conducted by the Rev. John C. Porath, pastor of the Winterset Methodist church. Burial will be made in the Winterset cemetery with Masonic grave-side services.
