Russell W. Sandy, 89, of Boone died of heart failure Monday, March 16, 1998 at Boone County Hospital.
A Masonic service by the Mt. Olive Lodge No. 79, AF & AM was held Friday, March 20, at the Schroeder Funeral Home in Boone. Private graveside services and burial of the cremated remains were at Linwood Park Cemetery Monday, March 23, with Father Robert Matthews officiating.
Russell Sandy was born Aug. 11, 1908 in Winterset to Jacob and Fanny (Kegley) Sandy. He attended school in Winterset. He married Ruby Lilga Feb. 10, 1935 at Grand Island, Neb. He worked as a field representative for an insurance company and owned Sandy Insurance in Boone. He was an Army veteran, serving during World War II. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, the American Legion, Mt. Olive Lodge No. 79, and the Boone High Twelve Club No. 72. He also served as county chairman of the Republican Party of Boone County, was on the Boone City Board of Adjustment and the Boone City Council, was director of the State Association of Independent Insurance Agents of Iowa, was on the Salvation Army Board and was past president of the Toastmasters of Boone.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Vava Sandy and Zola Lowden.
He is survived by his wife; a sister, Charlotte Paull (husband George) of Winterset; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to Grace Episcopal Church or to the Mt. Olive Lodge No. 79 AF & AM of Boone.
