Stephen E. O. Smith

Stephen E. O. Smith, son of Asa B. and Mary Matilda Smith, was born in Madison county, Iowa, February 22, 1878.

He attended the country schools and the earlier years of his life were spent in Madison county. In later years he spent much of his time doing farm work near Omaha, quite often coming back here to spend the winter with his sister, Mrs. Elmer Banks, of Douglas township.

In September, 1927, he was united in marriage to Lyda Norris, and spent the following winter in this county, later returning to Omaha. He was an honest, hard working and kindly dispositioned man. He had been husking corn in central Nebraska, returned to Council Bluffs, and passed away suddenly, Saturday morning, December 14, 1929, at the age of 51 years, 9 months and 22 days.

He leaves behind his wife and step daughter, five brothers and one sister, John N. G. Smith, of Snyder, Oklahoma; W. T., W. A. and R. A. Smith, living near Pitzer; Elijah S. Smith of Winterset, and Mrs. Nellie Weaver, of Ames.

Services were conducted Tuesday, December 17th, at the Tidrick funeral home, by the Rev. John T. Hall. Interment was made in the Primitive Baptist cemetery.

STEPHEN SMITH DIES IN COUNCIL BLUFFS

Stephen Smith, former Madison county man, was found dead Saturday at his boarding place in Council Bluffs. The body was brought Monday to Winterset where funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at two o’clock at the Tedrick funeral home by the Rev. J. T. Hall; burial was in the Primitive Baptist cemetery northeast of town.

He was 51 years old, the son of Asa Smith and was born and reared in the county. He had been working in central Nebraska and had been in Omaha and Council Bluffs but a short time before his death which occurred suddenly; he had not been ill.

Mr. Smith is survived by a wife and stepdaughter, his brothers, Will, Walter and Roy, who live near Pitzer; Elijah, of near Winterset; John who lives in Oklahoma; a sister, Mrs. Nellie Weaver, of Ames.

Death of Steve Smith

The funeral services for Steve Smith, who died at Council Bluffs Saturday, were held Tuesday afternoon, at 2 o’clock, at the Tedrick funeral home. Mr. Smith was fifty-one years of age at the time of his death. He had been working in Nebraska and had gone to Council Bluffs when he was taken suddenly ill with heart trouble.

Mr. Smith was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Asa B. Smith. He had been working in and about Omaha during the summer and spent the winter at the Elmer Banks home in Douglas township. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Nellie Weaver, of Ames, and five brothers: John N. G. Smith, of Snider, Oklahoma; W. T., W. A. and R. A. Smith, of Pitzer, and Elijah Smith, of Winterset. Rev. John T. Hall conducted the funeral services at Tidrick’s funeral home Tuesday afternoon, and burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.

Mrs. Nellie Weaver and son, Calvin, of Ames, were here Wednesday to attend the funeral of Mrs. Weaver’s brother, Stephen Smith which was held at two o’clock at the Tidrick funeral home.
