GEORGE WERTS DIED ON TUESDAY

Long Illness Ends in Death of Retired Farmer in Winterset

George Werts, well known retired farmer, died at his home in Winterset Tuesday, Jan. 8, at the age of 77 years. His death ended an extended illness.

Mr. Werts was a life-long resident of Madison county. He was born in Penn township May 17, 1874. His active years were spent at farming in Penn township. He moved to Winterset in 1949.

He was married Dec. 29, 1909, to Alma Anderson. They were married in Winterset at the home of the Rev. L. F. Davis.

Surviving are his wife; two sons, Loyal and Earl Werts of Winterset; two sisters, Mrs. Fred Fritz of Van Meter and Mrs. Ida Wright of Milo.

Brief funeral services will be held this Thursday at 1 p.m. from the Richards Funeral home, followed by formal services at 2:30 p.m. in the Penn Center church. The Rev. Glenn Parrott, pastor of the Winterset Methodist church, will officiate. Burial will be made in the Penn Center cemetery.

GEORGE WERTS

George Werts, son of Elias and Catherine Werts was born in Penn township, Madison county on May 17, 1874 and died at his home in Winterset, January 8, 1952 at the age of 11 years, seven months and 21 days. (this is in error, age 77 years)

On December 29, 1909 he was united in marriage to Alma Anderson. He is survived by his wife and two sons, Loyal and Earl both of Winterset. One son died in infancy. He also leaves six grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Ida Wright of Milo and Mrs. Fred Fritz of Van Meter. Besides his immediate family he leaves nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

His entire life was spent in Penn township until his retirement in October 1949 when he moved to his present home. He was well known in his community having lived 40 years on the same farm. His greatest comfort in his last months were in his radio programs and especially the singing of hymns.
