PIONEER WOMAN GOES TO HER ETERNAL REWARD
Mary Lavina, daughter of John and Rena (Irena Venard) Philby was born May 28, 1860, at Winterset, Iowa, and passed away at her home in Oxford, Nebraska, on January 24, 1940, at the age of 79 years, 7 months and 26 days.
She spent her early childhood in Iowa, Missouri and eastern Nebraska. She was the oldest child of a family of seven having one sister and five brothers, all of these however have preceded her in death.
She was united in marriage to Mr. Robert Swindell on March 4, 1877 at Eight Mile Grove, Cass County, Nebraska. To this union 12 children were born. Two of them, Maude and Walter, passed away in infancy. Her husband, Mr. Robert Swindell, preceded her in death last June 30th and one son, Milton R. departed this life at Salem, Oregon, on last November 16.
She came with her family to Harlan County in 1885 and has since made Mascot and surrounding communiteies her home. She was a devoted mother and loyal friend and passed through many of the struggles and hardships of early pioneer life.
She leaves to mourn her departing, five sons: L. L. Swindell of Topeka, Kansas; William H. of Kearney; Earl R. of Raymond, Washington; Ellsworth J. and O. T. Swindell, of Oxford; and four daughters: Mrs. Flora B. Baxter of Salem, Oregon; Mrs. Ella G. Dexter, of Sioux City, Iowa; Mrs. Iva L. Sylvester, of Greeley, Colorado; and Miss Pearl Swindell, of Oxford, Nebraska. Besides 29 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren and a number of other relatives and friends.
Services were held from the Methodist church in Oxford on Jan. 28th at 2 p.m. The Rev. H. W. Wagner, former pastor of the church assisted by Rev. Leon Foster officiating. Interment was made at the Mascot Cemetery.
